70 percent?

The earth's surface is 70 percent water.
A fit human being is 70 percent water.

WHY?

70 was conceived because a friend contracted spinal meningitis surfing a local break. I had no idea until a mutual friend told me about his illness. The initial goal of the site was to raise awareness about the effects of pollution on the resource and ourselves.

Logging illnesses served the main purpose, but when I started logging sessions and breaks the site became something I was using all the time. I started developing this part of the site more, just having fun with it, but also thinking that if waveriders used the site to log their sessions then the increased use could help promote water quality awareness more that a simple illness log.

70 Isn't About Exposing Where You Surf

70 is a personal tide log that you can share with good friends. If you want someone else's knowledge of a break, there are plenty of books you can buy and web sites that skim over a breaks characteristics. With 70 you record and build knowledge about a break with every session you log.

70 does not provide you with breaks, tell you how to get to breaks or allow you to publicly exploit breaks.

Your sessions and the information on the breaks you log are only visible to you or the select few you invite to the site. Friends of friends cannot see your breaks or sessions and you have the ability to hide breaks and sessions from everyone but yourself.

70 Isn't A Popularity Contest

70percent was built to help small groups of friends share knowledge built from years of studying and riding waves and to promote water quality awareness. If you are more focused on meeting people, one of the purely social networking sites may be what you are looking for.

What happens to all the info in the system?

70percent.org will never sell your confidential break or session data. I would, however, like to make public maps from some of the data. These maps will illustrate illnesses contracted from polluted water water, sealife reports, water clarity, pollution, trash on beaches and other environmental awareness affecting information, as reported by users. I also hope to generate maps showing the number of sessions and surfers using beaches by region. These maps will never reveal specific breaks or sessions. From this data, we can show just how much the resource means to local and regional economies and possibly help policy makers realize exactly how pollution affects the communities involved.

Inviting Friends

Before you invite anyone to 70percent.org, think about whether you want him or her in the water next to you or not. You'll be giving them direct access to the breaks, sessions and surf checks you've made available to your network.

Sharing Sessions and Breaks

You wouldn't pull up to a secret or local break with 10 guys who each have 20 friends to tell about it, so don't make session or break logs at these types of breaks visible to your network. Keep them private. That's what the button is for. If a friend has logged a spot you think he shouldn't let him know.

Some things are better learned the hard way. A good break is one of them.
