Not to take away from the serious Rocks these guys were swinging, but you gotta think that at some point while getting outpaced by these massive Pipline bombs one of these guys would have looked down at the fat nose and 10 feet of thick, drag inducing rail in the water and said to themselves…

“you know… I really think this board is kinda slow.”

They did! If you look at the boards Butch and Peck started riding they were way more suited for Pipe. Then, the shortboard revolution baby!

46% of White shark attacks were on divers, but in attacks in which the victim was collecting marine creatures, only 10% of attacks were against urchin divers. Abalone divers didn't fair so well though in this statistic, as 56% of those attacks were against them.

The Cali Department of Fish and Game has an Urchin Fishery page which contains some really interesting info: The number one diver in 2006 brought in 233 thousand pounds, worth 118 thousand dollars. Another tidbit: The total California catch has declined dramatically from 25 million pounds in 1991 to 7.5 million pounds in 2003.
