SF This Weekend
Mags and I are visiting friends in SF this weekend. We’re pretty stoked to see some new art, eat great food and check out the SF surf scene. Anyone have recommendations?

The Upsetters - 14 Dub Blackboard Jungle -
One of the first dub albums to surface from the mega watt depths deep inside Jamaica circa 74. Originally released in a batch of 300 LPs, now available at your finger tips remastered and restored. If you don't have this, do yourself a favor and jump into the abyss.

El Metate on Bryant @ maybe 21st street? is great for fish tacos and veg burritos. Atlas cafe on Florida and 19th is a great hang out with some tasty food. Tommy Guerrero and a few other well known local artist visit there for lunch often. Mollusk surf shop on Irving and 46th ave is a great “drug” store. Get on a bus or bike and just ride around. It’s the only way to really see the city. Visit www.fecalface.com for any local art showings. There are too many galleries to list here. For surfing, I would take a 70 mile trip south to Santa Cruz for this weekend swell that’s coming in. Get down there for an afternoon evening session. Drive down Hwy 101 and up and over Hwy 17 for the quick route. Come back up Hwy 1 for the scenic route. Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica and Ocean Beach in SF are the two main surf spots in the area so expect lots of people, but you can still get a few waves to yourself. It’s mostly junk swell this time of year around SF. I would also take a short trip up north across the GG Bridge. Muir Woods and Point Reyes are two gorgeous places to visit. There’s way too much to see in such a short time and this weekend the roads will be very congested so plan your trips wisely. If you’re here for all three days I would suggest Saturday in the city, Sunday in Santa Cruz and Monday in the North Bay. Have a fun trip.

The surf is pretty dismal up there this time of year so you might want to focus on the museums because we’re pretty limited down here. The new DeYoung in Golden Gate park is cool - if it’s a clear day the observation tower is tops. The Rothko at SFMOMA is right up your alley. If you’re in the Richmond the dim sum at Mayflower on 27th & Geary is pretty tasty. Good Pho on Irving and 19th - so many food options, North Beach alone will drive you crazy…

Thanks guys. Looks like OB could be pretty windy, so Fin’s suggestion looks best for enjoying a surf. Public transportation looks ruff from SF to SC though. bus to train to bus to bus to get to SC. May just rent a car for the day so we can take Fins advice and drive the 1. :D

Besides checking Surfline for the conditions, here’s a cam for Linda Mar. http://pedropoint.com/4mSeq.htm.
And this is what LM looks like when there’re south winds.

Rob-Mollusk is a given and I went to a pretty cool Damien Hirst show right of off Union Square which may still be up. Fort Point is worth a look if only for the history of it all. The drive down 1 is awesome though, check the creeks around Ano Nuevo- there’s some fantastic setups there but you can just taste the man in grey- I don’t even feel safe sitting my truck! Around easter they were totally firing but there was no way I was paddling out alone. I have a starfin to loan you next time Andy visits

There is a chance you might get offshore (SW) winds at Linda Mar or Ocean Beach if you get there before 9 or 10am on Saturday. There is a fun swell combo coming in. Surf them both on the mid-high tide, which leaves a big window this weekend. Head down to Santa Cruz but gear up for the crowds everywhere you go. It’s gonna be crazy this weekend.
Marin County offers surf as well. Bolinas is a REALLY mellow (read:small) longboard break that will catch that south swell this weekend. Just continue up 1 past STinson Beach.
Mollusk is your best bet for an awesome surf shop experience, but Aqua at Sloat (at Ocean Beach) is a great shop too. It’s been hot up here, and the weather has been nice. Unfortunately, the surf has been mucked up by the wind and the swell has been lacking as well. I definitely recommend checking out Muir Woods in Marin too.

Rob,
If you see my blue Mandala 2+1 at Mollusk will you please take a picture of it? I think Manny is waiting for the perfect sunset to photograph the thing before shipping… ;-)

Oh yeah, and don’t forget to grab some finger lickin’ good Pakastani food at Pakwan on 16th street in the Mission…

One more… Get a mission burrito after hours at El Farlito (El Fart-a-lot-o)…

Chum, if I see your board sitting on the floor of Mollusk, I’m going to buy it. THEN I’ll send you a photo.

There’s a Vivenne Westwood exhibit at the DeYoung right now. She’s the brain behind the Sex Pistols wardrobe and the godmother of punk couture. Good stuff!
All You Knead serves up a good breakfast on Haight.
For evening drinks and munchies, ChaChaCha (also on Haight) is a killer Cuban experience complete with a photo of Desi Arnaz behind the bar.
SF is the best! Have a good time!
