Sea Legs – Patagonia and FC Surf Film
The surfco sponsored film has become a vehicle for proving the company’s right to exist. It’s the one place where rider personality really shows through the photoshop fog and where style can’t be faked. It is also a chance for team riders to spark the imagination of surfers everywhere through waves discovered and the lines drawn on them. Given that stretchy boardshorts and backpacks with 1,000 zippers aren’t actually required for surfing, I’d go as far as to say that surf films are one of the biggest contributions a company can make to surf culture (beyond any environmental efforts of course).
That said, it’s about time that Patagonia and Fletcher Chouinard surfboards release a surf flick. Their soon to be released effort titled Sea Legs, should give the mainstream surf world a glimpse into what their take on surf culture is all about. Given the Malloy’s status as veteran surf filmmakers I don’t think the film will dissapoint. Personally I’m hoping for a Geoff McFedrich animation, some funny ass skit by Chris Malloy (Shaka Brah anyone?) and some environmental awareness messages that do less preaching and more informing, which Patagonia does incredibly well. Here’s the trailer…
UPDATE: Video wasn’t playing for a bit, seems to be fixed now.
