Goodwill Media

Despite all the negativity surrounding the event pictures and video prove that The Surfline Goodwill Tour made allot of ‘La Jolla’ locals happy (pic 27). Note the already begun medical center (pic 19) which internet trolls claimed will never exist.

How I would have done it had I been involved in the Goodwill Tour:

    1. Keep the beach open to the public.
    2. Allow anyone to enter the contest for a small donation fee for charity.
    3. Allowed spectators to watch the contest on the beach (why they didn’t do this is baffling. We get to see the contest online but the locals barred from the beach who don’t have access to the web will never see it. Just bizarre).
    4. Instead of handing personal check and cash directly to the mayor all the surfers should have spent a few days building the medical clinic Habit of Humanity style.
    5. If they are building a medical clinic in Mexico why not invite Doctors Without Borders or Surf Aid?
    6. Even though $20k will go far in Mexico it’s not enough to sustain a clinic with a doctor, staff, supplies and equipment. There should have been some cooperation with the Mexican government or relief agency, otherwise the internet trolls are right and the clinic is a farce.

Privatizing the beach in Mexico violates their federal laws. There are questions about who is in charge of the money and how it will be spent. Remember, if you are a Surfline subscriber, that is your money. If Surfline was more organized they could accept further donations from their subscribers.

The irony of a surf forecast service privatizing a beach in another country while their swell hype sends mass crowds to your local beach is rich.

Question: If you drove 15 hours from San Diego to Scorpion Bay only to find access blocked by a Surfline Goodwill tour would you be stoked because they were giving the mayor $20,000?

All great points, I agree fully.

RE: 5 & 6… I believe the government was going to match or send a physician if the town came up with a certain amount. I think it was in TSJ.

I’ve been stoked on the lack of crowds due to hosed up forcasts all weekend. Whoot!
