Fluid Earth Fins
Fluid Earth makes sustainable fins from a composite made of plant material. They do carbon offsetting and offer a recycling program to reduce their impact. What I don’t get i
though, is why put all that energy into manufacturing a composite when bamboo is already naturally stronger than steel and has a great flex pattern?

It’s true, bamboo is a great material; however, it is not water tight. Once you start using chemical resins to seal and protect the bamboo, you end up incorporating a significant amount of toxic petroleum-based compounds into your fins. There is another alternative; use bamboo fibers as reinforcement within a plant-based resin like that used by Fluid Earth. This type of technology is currently being developed by Fluid Earth. Until then, the most sustainable fin option is Fluid Earth’s current glass-reinforced bio-polymer fins. Recycleable. Carbon neutral. http://www.fluidearth.org
