Ether Signing At Shelter: FUN
While it’s possible Tom Curren could have been putting on a “How To Bottom Turn” clinic somewhere, I’m pretty sure the place to be in the surf world last night was Andrew Kidman’s book signing at Shelter Surf Shop in Long Beach.
I think 1 in 3 surfers present were personally responsible for creating some kind of stoke inducing object. Richard Kenvin showed 2 film segments: one of punk rock Wind-An-Sea and one of Rasta that had everyone groaning in disbelief. I met RT from Warbles, who’s quality of person and character matches his blog. Shapers Jeff Beck from Nine Lights Surfboards and Josh Hall were there.
Slideshow and more after the jump…
I think I spent more time talking to GnarGnar of Invasion from Planet C than I did with my girl. That makes me feel kinda weird, but dangit, GnarGnar is trying to get a new film going (Hardboiled Private Eye meets surf) that sounds even better than his first. The owners of Shelter, Kim and Graham couldn’t be cooler. They served free Becks and wine, chatted with nearly everyone and always had HUGE smiles going. I’d be having too much fun too if it was my event.
Kidman’s book looks much better than the PDF or any small group of photos can represent. In fact it’s not so much a book as it is a tome of surf stoke, which lucky owners will be paging through for a very long time. The photos are huge and nearly every page makes you want to not just go for a surf, they make you want to travel 20 hours to get near a break, carry 2 tons of video, film and other assorted documentation equipment to the spot and then rough it till you get something worthy. The $150 dollar price puts the book out of range for most people, but for 1000 collectors, art lovers, and over stoked surfers it’ll be money well spent.
Thanks to Kim, Graham, Kirk, Gnar Gnar, RT, and all the other heads.

Looks like a great event. Received my copy of the book in the mail last week. Really amazing collection of works. And fascinating captions to go along with the photos. Kidman is awesome - that guy really found a tiny spark of surfing soul and helped nurture it into a flame. He’s a part of so much of the good in the surfing world, whether he’s creating it himself or inspiring others to create it. And considering all the crap in the surf world/industry his accomplishments cannot be overlooked and should be supported!

The book must be an awesome collector’s item and it’s obviously a work of art.
Too bad it’s a little expensive, but it’s pretty obvious it’s well worth the money to anyone who can have it.
Besides, it’s always nice to see things that come from genuine love from surfing, not just to explore it and make money … and always nice not to see the usual competitions/asp world tour surfers deal.
Cheers

[…] Saturday March 29th, Shelter Surf Shop will be celebrating their spiffy new location on 4th St in Long Beach. Kim and Graham really know how to put on an event, as their last gig, the Ether book tour was full of creative and in-trim surfers. […]
