Switch-foot is a book featuring art and photography from Albe Falzon, George Greenough, Dan Merkel, Joe Curran, Peter Crawford and more. The images are a well rounded collection beautiful waves, quivers, nostalgia and surfers both in and out of trim. Have a look around the site, it’s worth the visit.

The 06 Fish Fry is on this weekend in Oceanside, and should coincide with a nice swell.
Thrity million gallons of partially treated poo were spilt leaked into the surf off Huntington Saturday. Two days later, all the media has to show for it is a three paragraph article in the LA Times and a piece in the OC Register titled “Sewage leak restricts beaches”.
Update: I’ve since found 9 more articles. Note to self: click “See all related articles”
Thirty million gallons don’t exactly register with me as a “leak”. I equate the word “leak” with something that happens to relatively small amounts of liquid contained by say, a garden hose or a strofoam cup. Another strange choice of vocabulary in the article is the word ‘restricted’. Does anyone know if the yellow signs on the beach read restricted or do they read closed? Also, when the cops were kicking everyone out of the water were they saying the beach was restricted or closed? I’m curious.
The article goes on to say, “Workers diverted about 30 million gallons of the waste out of a secondary pipe so the leak could be repaired.”
Whoa… Diverted? Diverted where? Into a bucket? Into another pipe? Does this mean there isn’t 30 million gallons of poo in the ocean? Or does it mean the sewage was dumped into the ocean, much like what happend in Oahu recently?
Just when you thought the spin couldn’t get any better, it gets better. According to Jennifer Cabral OCSD spokeswoman, “There was no spill. This is a contained situation”.
Contained is a good word. ‘Contained’ implies that 30 million gallons of partially treated poo are not floating freelance around 5 miles of OC lineup. ‘Contained’ makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. ‘Contained’ makes me want to paddle out right now.
The article ends by stating that we can use the sandy beaches, but the water is off limits. I suppose this is why the title reads ‘restricts’ and not ‘closes’. The WATER is closed, but the SAND is open for tourism. This makes me feel much better, because I love the feel of poo soaked sand between my toes.
I’m a bit dissappointed by the coverage this spill leak has gotten, so I’ve prepared a few sample questions for the OC Register in case there is another sewage spill leak:
Update: While there is much more coverage on this than I innitially thought, the OCR’s article from Sunday still reaks.
Update to the Update: It seems that the pipe was closed because a leak was found, but none of the 9 articles I found are asking how long the leak has been around or how bad the leak was.
If you are looking into buying some new fins for summer, check this page for links to manufacturers, some Greenough modifications, and these great thrust tests. I had no idea you should take this much care when buying flappers. I was just going to pop out and get some churchills, but if Greenough’s in the UDTs… :D
Greg Griffin has posted some Brewer templates from the 70’s on the surferthemag.com forums.
O’neill has the surf media battling it out in an online poll for best boardshort design. While you’re at it browse the rest of oneill.com. Great looking site.
I can’t even begin to tell you who is on surfermag.com’s surfer radio today, but I know it’ll be worth tuning in. Sam Bass will surely enlighten you on the top 5 stories of the week, bring you an interesting surf celeb and tell you what classic rock album was stuck in his 8 track player during his latest baja trip.
Tune in 12pm Pacific, 3pm eastern and anytime you freaking feel like it with downloadable podcasts and archives.

Patagonia has a cool feature on their site called Bend To Baja. Its a microsite about the Molloy brother’s trip from oregan to deep baja in a veg-oil powered truck. The site features stories, photos, interviews and video of everything from surf to organic farming including a visit with uncle Jerry.

There is so much happening in surfboard design and development right now, and lots of it is being worked on or commented on in surfing’s two major online design forums.
Bert Burger and Greg Loehr are starting a compsand operation in San Diego. Apparently they’ve secured the backing of industry bigwigs and Kelly and Taj are ripping on the boards. I heard a rumor of the shaper involved with the project. If it IS this guy, he’ll definately turn some local SD heads in his direction. More rumors, hints and speculation at sways.
Matt Biolas of Lost fame, has sent some of his pro’s to INDO with EPS/Epoxy fish for testing, but doesn’t have feedback yet. He is having issues producing EPS boards in significant quantities, and is being super open by posting on the surfermag forum. Greg and Burt stepped into his his thread on surfermag BB and tried to help out. What follows is probably the most open and honest business post on a forum ever. The thread has guest appearances by Cole Surfboards, Pinliner from Moonlight Glassing, foam makers, kooks, etc.
Just to make sure we have all the construction methods in this post, here are some nice hollow wooden fish going into mollusk in SF.
