Baja By Air Or By Sea, Or Both
During that last good south swell we had, a bro of mine flew down to the well known point break pictured below. It was quite a scene with good surf, quite a few pros out, jet skis with photographers in the lineup and the usual assortment of locals.
Everyone was enjoying the swell, lots of shredding going on, photos taken etc… when out of the blue, the Billabong Albatross buzzes over and lands in the bay inside the points. It’s important to note that the Mexican government doesn’t take kindly to seaplanes of any description landing on their coast line, as they provide way too much access to the drug cartels. As soon as the Albatross landed, the Federales stationed at the point went into a fury of action. They mounted up, powered down to the beach brandishing their machine guns, began shouting incomprehensible Spanish into a megaphone and waited for the pilot and crew to come ashore.
While the Federales were waiting on the beach, though, a jetski cruised over to the plane which promptly belched Andy Irons, ready to shred. The jetski then sped away and the plane took off, without even a wave to the Federales. The first ski met up with the other ski and they headed north to breaks unknown, photographers and pros in tow. The skis apparently didn’t come back till dark and Andy Irons left the point for the nearest 5 star hotel, which happened to be 5 hours away.
I guess that’s one way to surf the best pointbreak in Baja.
Thanks to captain Hondo for the photos and story.

Thats an awesome post….. not sure how comfortable I’d feel running away on a jetski from the federales that far south without a kevlar…..

Just shows how far removed pro celebrities are from the average surfer these days. Jet skis. Sea planes. Tow ins. Five star hotels? I still drive to the beach and paddle in to my waves.

[…] Remember that post I made about the Billabong clipper zooming into one of the best right points in Baja in a precision strike on swell? Looks like the same crew took Rasta and Dorian on a wild goose chase during the best Cali swell of the year. They got some cool lineup photos flying down there though. Related Posts: […]
