Anything But Three Slideshow

This year’s Fish Fry (titled Anything But Three) was less commercial and had fewer attendees. What it lacked though, is what benefited it. With the majority of shapers represented being underground, independent or alt surfcraft specialists, a very freeform and BROtherly stoke was extended to everyone.

Christenson, Mandala, Jake Moss, Shaun Ambrose, Ford, Ian Zamora and KG plus lots of other established and up and coming shapers had amazing boards at the event. Surfers got the chance to ride as many different shapes throughout the day as they could pick up. I personally surfed boards I’ve never imagine existed. How else are you going to know how an epoxy, hull bottomed, perimeter stringer bonzer will perform?

Without a doubt though, Marlin Bacon’s (101fins.com) featherlight bamboo fins made the biggest impression. Both the glass-on versions and the new loxbox removables were lightening bonzers, quads and twins all over the reef.

Such a high level of excitement over handcrafted boards and fins begs the question, why does this only happen once a year?

thanks for sharing. some awesome boards there…might have to figure a gathering in hawaii!

  8. rob70 Says:

I surfed a full hour on my board. 2 hours and 3 other boards later, Marlin handed me his brand spanking new Daniel Thompson quad. I could only get 1 wave on it. What a dope.

    Also, I didn’t ride a longboard. Doh!

  9. Marlin Says:

Gosh darn good time at the beach…we’ll have to do it again real soon! Still haven’t ridden my new Daniel Thompson.

  10. rob70 Says:

I didn’t quite catch that you hadn’t ridden it yet when you handed it to me, if I had, I would have turned you down. Imagine the pressure not to ding it! :D

  11. popoutbandit Says:

    Marlin, go ride that thing!!

  13. Basswave (Tony) Says:

    Thanks for covering the event,

It was real a good time…..Its like a cool car show but you actuallly get to take them for a spin instead of just looking.

BTW: Everybody get on Marlin’s case because His fins rock.
They have to be the best fins I have ever tried.

    Cheers

  • I've been following Malwitz Custom shapes from his beginning. It started as a way to watch the east coast scene and the backyard scene grow at the same time. I really couldn't believe that surfing had spread so far and wide, that backyarders were popping up in major cities with intimidating routes to the beach. Fast forward to today and the duder's shapes are looking really straight and he's moved on to harder game, like hollow wooden rides. All I can say is "wow" and keep blogging & shaping brody.

  • Drift Mag issue 07 is out now. You've got to give it up to Drift... they cover the surfing the other rags don't. It's the surfing you want to see... logs, fish, wooden shelf material as surfboards, thrusters, everything, AND they support the surf blog community. The content has only gotten better over time, but is Drift suddenly no longer free? Is it no longer a digital download? Has it tossed the free love direction it started out in, in favor of a traditional mag model?

  • If you want to go to a real show, the one for the public... the one for surf RIDERS, not wearers, mark "Sacred Craft" on your calendar for the 11th and 12th of October.

  • Would you believe there are still boards in the ASR? Check this thread on the erBB for proof. Some Highlights:

9 Fish, the kookiest of popout sellers has gone to new heights. (12 foot or so)
    Insane channels
    Bikini Babes
The SkyRock chinese pop out booth with a seriously lonely seller.

  • Sportsknack is a board rental program that works like Netflix. You pay 10 bucks a month, and ride as many boards as you want as long as you want. I'd get started early though, before the boards get dinged up.
