Tales from the Black Van (trailer) is showing this Saturday at the radness that is Shelter Surf Shop in Long Beach. As if that wasn’t enough to get you up or down to the LBC, Maggie’s show was extended another month, so you’ve got a second chance to peep here work and pick up a piece.

Musica Surfica

You’ve got to love the direction the last few years have taken surfing. On one hand you’ve got this pro tour that is elevating the possibilities of surfing by paying the best surfers in the world to do nothing but. On the other you have surfers shunning the sportification of waveriding through their boards, turns, attitudes, everything.

While I love both groups waveriding, the second is so interesting because they are actively bridging art and surfing and they are pulling from the past as well as the present to do so.

That’s where Musica Surfica comes in. It’s a bridge between classical music and classical, fin-less waveriding. It’s a connection 90% of surfers out there won’t grasp. Maybe more. And it might, as it did for me, take one great wave at a spot like Malibu ridden on an fin-less piece of board to ~~see~~ feel the connection.

Kudos for everyone involved in this film for taking surfing in an unexpected direction and elevating our entire existence by doing so.
